Low’s eighth album, Drums and Guns (2007), took the band’s penchant for reinvention and stripped it down to a stark, often unsettling core. Whereas The Great Destroyer (2005) had introduced heavier guitars and a rock-oriented punch, Drums and Guns reins things back—yet not in the same hushed, slowcore fashion of Low’s early career. Instead, the album feels both minimalistic and sonically fractured, with loops, electronic textures, and manipulated vocals creating a subtly disorienting atmosphere. Produced once again by Dave Fridmann, Drums and Guns is notable for its bleak mood, pointed political undercurrents, and a willingness to embrace experimental structures.
