Released in 1999 on the band’s own label, Chairkickers’ Union, in partnership with Kranky, Christmas is an eight-song mini-album that has become a cult favorite among unusual holiday releases. While Low’s fundamental restraint was already established, Christmas surprised listeners by subtly expanding their trademark minimalism to include a warmer, more festive palette—albeit still in Low’s characteristic style. Arguably the most recognized track from the album, “Just Like Christmas” is more buoyant than much of Low’s earlier work. With its lightly distorted guitar, brushy drum shuffle, and sleigh bells, it evokes the hushed coziness of the holidays without becoming saccharine.
